Environmental, Health, & Safety Specialist

Role

The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist will implement, administer and sustain site-level EHS programs and procedures per company requirements or applicable EHS regulatory requirements or in collaboration with the EHS Team. The EHS Specialist performs standard work to maintain compliance with federal, state, local regulations and company requirements. Responsible for conducting inspections, investigations, risk assessments and incident trending and implementing corrective action where environment EHS hazards or risks exist. The EHS Specialist: builds collaborative and productive working relationships; networks with, and appropriately involves operations management, support functions and employees; influences operational decisions; and implements assignments that have a impact on operations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform EHS compliance applicability reviews and EHS risk assessments and implement effective programs procedures, practices and standard work to ensure regulatory compliance and protect employees, communities and the environment.
  • Assist in implementing, monitoring, and evaluating the workplace to ensure compliance with Company EHS requirements and to provide a safe and secure workplace for employees, visitors, vendors, and guests.
  • Conduct inspections, investigations, safety observations, job safety analysis and risk assessments and resulting mitigation activities that will identify, evaluate and control unsafe EHS hazards or risks.
  • Develop, implement, conduct and sustain EHS training, safe operating procedures and best practices to minimize EHS risks and to ensure the safety and health of employees.
  • Investigate, compile and develop investigative reports on any incident/accident that may occur; and ensure action items are adequately complete. Conduct Root Cause Analyses in conjunction with Operations leadership.
  • Coordinate or lead planning, preparation, implementation, execution and recovery of emergency or crisis management events, employee injury events, environmental pollution or permit deviation events, fire safety events or other EHS risk events.
  • Coordinate or lead regulatory agency inspections, reporting, or other activities in conjunction with Operations Management and EHS management.
  • Conduct EHS incident investigations to determine and implement root cause corrective actions. Leverage lessons learned and implement continuous improvement actions across the site.
  • Develop, implement, administer and sustain site-level employee safety and injury prevention programs.
  • Develop, implement, administer and sustain site-level environmental permit management and pollution prevention programs.
  • Collect, measure and analyze site-level EHS metrics and KPI performances, to discover trends for continuous improvement or corrective measures. Perform management reviews and report on EHS performance and corrective measures.
  • Partner and collaborate with the business and operations management, and support functions, to implement and administer EHS programs, procedures and practices.
  • Contribute and participate in company EHS program evaluations and EHS initiatives.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS in environmental, health, safety or relevant scientific or engineering field
  • 3+ years’ experience in an EHS programs, operations or engineering
  • 3+ years’ experience of applied site EHS compliance management, including regulatory and
  • Possess regulatory and technical EHS knowledge as well as work well with limited supervision while being responsible for project management, compliance assurance, risk mitigation, injury prevention and environmental management.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple & technically assignments concurrently. Organized, analytical, detail-oriented, problem-solver, project management skills and strong focus on results.
  • Ability to effectively participate in cross-functional teams in a fast-paced and diverse environment. Ability to work effectively in teams. Demonstrated ability to inspire team work.
  • Ability to be an effective communicator and send clear, concise and consistent messages, both verbally and in writing including the ability to effectively present proposed plans and results to management. Able to effectively communicate with and influence senior leadership.
  • Able to travel 20-40%.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in safety/industrial/quality engineering, safety or other science or engineering discipline from an accredited university.
  • EHS professional registration and/or certification from an accredited organization in one or more of the following areas: safety engineering or management, occupational health or industrial hygiene, hazardous materials management, or environmental engineering or management.
  • Working experience in OHSAS18001, ISO14001, ISO 45001 or similar accredited EHS management systems.

Position Summary:

We are searching for a dynamic and experienced leader to join Evergreen Safety Council (ESC) as our President/Executive Director. Established in 1932, Evergreen Safety Council is a private, non-profit(501(c)(3)), non-governmental organization based in Kirkland, Washington, with a dedicated corps of instructors that delivers safety and health information, consulting and training to almost anywhere our clients and members need us. ESC is a member of the National Safety Council and is a Founding Member of the American Association of Safety Councils.

Evergreen Safety Council’s mission is to save lives and reduce injuries and losses, whether at work, at home, at play or on the highway.

The President/Executive Director will work closely with the Board of Directors, serving as managing director of Council operations and as the main link between the Council and our members/clients, the community as well as a liaison to organizations which help ESC accomplish our mission. The ideal candidate for this position has previous management experience and a proven track record for effective team management, a back ground in safety, and results-driven leadership.

Primary Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the overall management and operation of ESC and the protection of the organization’s financial and human assets.
  • Execute all decisions of the Board of Directors.
  • Plan, administer and attend all Board of Directors meetings.
  • Assist the Board of Directors in the annual strategic planning and develop and implement ESC’s short and long-term goals to achieve the strategic plan.
  • Oversee all accounting functions, including budget, payroll and audits.

 

    • Handle all aspects of human resource management, including but not limited to hiring and termination, developing job descriptions, and setting compensation.
    • Supervises and directs key staff in the performance of their duties; evaluates the performance of Department Managers and Directors, provides overall control and direction for the personnel function of ESC, including active participation in or approval of personnel actions.
  • Evaluates the services provided by ESC in relation to specified goals and standards, implements modifications where appropriate and seeks new programs and methodology for providing services our members and clients need.
  • Analyze and evaluate vendor services.
  • Oversee maintenance of all ESC facilities and equipment.

 

    • Develop and Implement advertising and marketing plans.
    • Seek outside funding in the form of grants and contracts from public and private sources.
    • Complete all reports generated at federal, state and local levels in a timely manner, or delegate their completion to appropriate department heads.
    • Address and handle client issues that remain unresolved after being addressed by the department supervisor.
    • Address legal issues as they arise, utilizing proper legal authorities as necessary.
    • Maintain effective relationships with other personnel and organizations, both public and private, and actively participate in associations or organizations related to ESC.
    • Uphold the Mission, Vision and Core Values of ESC at all times.
  • Perform other related duties, as required.

 

Knowledge/Experience/Skills: 

    • Bachelor’s degree in business management or other related field. Prior knowledge and experience with Safety Management and/or OSHA compliance is desired.
    • Must be an experienced leader with appropriate business, financial, or industry experience that includes management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, leadership and coordination of people, entrepreneurial spirit desired.
    • Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills with the ability to achieve multiple bottom lines, while getting the job done.
    • A professional image with excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Willing to work independently/self-directed, and be accountable for actions
  • Ability to interface effectively within all levels of the organization
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, PPT)

Compensation:                

  • Based on education and experience. Range: $85,000 – $105,000.
